The Story of Denim Cut-off Shorts

The Story of Denim Cut-off Shorts

Cropped shorts, cut offs, booty shorts, daisy dukes, are a few nicknames for "cut-off" denim shorts.  While I am sure you have worn these shorts for many summers or maybe it is a distant memory (and you'd like to keep it that way).  Have you wondered why we decided to cut the legs off of jeans and wear them as shorts?    The idea is very basic but has become popular and has held it's own as a summer staple.  Why not grab a refreshing cocktail and join me while we dig into the tale that has a the shortest hem.  Oh hot summer, you bring us the story of cropped denim shorts!

How did we decide to cut our jeans into shorts?

Denim shorts have been around since the 1930s, when they were accepted as leisurely clothing.  In the 1960s and 1970s the concept of cutting the legs off of jeans, to allow the raw edge to fray became a trend.  Cut-offs can be made from existing jeans, but are also sold commercially.

My Favorite Cropped "Cut-off" Denim Brands...

An extremely short version of denim cut-off shorts were popularly known as Daisy Dukes, which refer to the character from the American television show The Dukes of Hazzard.

Denim cut-off shorts can be worn by both men and women.

The term "jorts," defined simply as denim shorts, was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013 and looks exactly like "cutoff" .

I haven't thought about denim shorts in such a long time, mostly because i couldn't fit into my pre-baby cut offs.  However, they seem to linger around and surge in appearances when they become trendy again.  Tank tops, heat, swimming, and big sunglasses seem to be the most sought after summer staples that are best paired with denim shorts.  Why not bing out your best Daisy Dukes impression, denim cut-offs, and show some leg?
