The Shapes of Scarves

Designers such as Alexander McQueen have brought back the square with an edge, skulls that is. The square also makes the best head scarf and create more design appeal when folded on it's bias. You can also flip the design and wear as a triangle with the design covering your neckline. This can be such a great accessory becuase it actually appears as a fancy blouse underneath.

The Popped Collar

Have you ever wondered who started the trend of "popping" collars? I have wondered how this trend became such a sensation and how it began. I have known friends to wear a popped collar and even more than one collar upturned at once. I don't know who thinks of the term "popped collar", but you'll be happy to know that there is a really cool history behind it.

The History of the Scarf

carves are full of memories and never go out of style. They are timeless and can make any blank palate full of life and fashion. My friends, I am excited to share the story of the scarf with you.

Scarves were first used for hygiene purposes early on in Ancient Rome. They were not intended for dress or to accessorize but rather served a purpose. Can you imagine? Function with no fashion?

The Sheath Dress

A version of the sheath dress was spotted early on in Egyptian paintings. The Goddess Isis was discovered in an ancient Egyptian sheath dress woven of colorful linen and embellished with bead work and embroidery. This was an indication of her high social standing is the ankle length of the skin tight (sheath) dress.

The Story of the Nail File

You use a nail file right? My personal favorite is the kiss lips, animal prints, shoes, or the latest fashion patterns. I can not imagine life without my nail file and pretty sure I don't want to. Let's tell the story of the nail file and appreciate what it does for our well manicured nails today. A nail file is a tool that is used to gently grind down and shape the edges of your nails They are used in manicures and pedicures after the nail has been trimmed.

Is it Jacket or Coat?

A Coat is one of the earliest clothing categories that date back to the early Middle Ages.

By the eighteenth century, overcoats surpassed cloaks as outerwear, and by the mid-twentieth century the term jacket and coat were used interchangeably. However, there is a difference and the confusion started many years ago!

The Gucci Honeycomb

Gucci makes cereal? Ha! They do not, but I'm sure we would all want Gucci honeycombs if they existed. This logo print is known as the Gucci "honeycomb" and is simply named after its reversed double Gs and dots that take shape as a honeycomb.

Many have tried to copy this honeycomb pattern with their logo, such as Guess and company. The use of the honeycomb earned a nearly 5 million dollar lawsuit with Gucci. In 2013, the courts ruled in favor of Guess and that the interlocking G's were distinct enough to Gucci.

The Tag Tutorial

Once upon a time, not so long ago, my husband mumbled a question to me in the wee hours of an early in the morning. I am a night owl, so I did not remember anything he was asking me. Although, a few words I vaguely heard, something about his new suits and its tags. Fast forward a few weeks and he was trying suits on at a store I worked at. I hear him ask the men's sales associate I worked with, "Jen told me to leave these manufacturers tags on right?", an innocent question from a rookie suit guy. There were a few moments of silence and some chuckles and then all eyes were on me.

The Christmas Stocking

In some Christmas traditions, gifts inside the stockings are the only toys the child receives from Santa Claus. In other traditions, presents are wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree. Some people even put their Christmas stockings by their bedposts so Santa Claus can fill it while they sleep.

There are no written records of the Christmas Stocking's origin. However, there are popular legends that tell the history of this Christmas tradition known as Saint Nicholas.

You truly get what you pay for and know that the lining is usually the price culprit.

Fossil Makes What?

Fossil has an amazing history that is backed by years of innovation and manufacturing. Their reputation feels hidden by a brand that seems so basic, but is far from it. Michelle watches are one of the most sought after women's watches and one of the first to have diamonds in or around the face. Yes, that's right made by Fossil. The majority of people do not believe me when I tell them about the watch manufacturingFossil is responsible for. I promise I am not making it up! I'm happy to share the Fossil story with you.

Dressing the Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for stuffing otherwise known as dressing, giving thanks with family, and the start of Black Friday shopping. I'm already stalking my favorite retailers for the best deals. However, Thanksgiving dinner needs some serious preparation. My favorite part? The dressing, or stuffing which I will be telling you all about this week. This weeks style story is brought to you by a gobble gobble...

The History of Black Friday

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s and marked beginning of the holiday season. Black refers to retailers shifting from the red to the black, meaning profits. This is an industry reference to accounting records which kept by hand, red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit.

The Invention of Style

We love our individual style whether we call it hippie, chic, rocker, conservative, edgy, sporty, casual, or preppy. Like it or not you have one, and your style is your own personal preference. Style is a choice and should be within our comforts unless of course it's completely adorable and worth a little pain. The history of style has put us on a path to grow on our own. My favorite part of this story the pioneers in early fashion history are still present on the runways. Not to mention, are available for sale in many retailers today.

Animal Print, Cheetah!

Who doesn't love a fun animal print? Cheetah looks great on shoes, belts, scarves, and just about anything. The best part is the variations and colors you will find on just about every accessory.

It never gets old! Which is your favorite, Leopard, zebra, tiger, or cheetah? Animal prints are often confused with one another because they are so similar in families but are very different cats. Meow! I found a fascinating book on Cheetahs and it inspired me to share the history with you.

Since ancient history, cheetahs have been admired the most amongst wild cats. This is due to their tremendous speed and beautiful coats. I have wondered how this distinct pattern came about and why it is almost always known as a fashion print.

The "Witches Hat"

Happy Halloween my fellow style historians! I thought this would be the perfect time to share the story of the witches hat. Have you wondered where the witches hat originated from?

I think the most intriuging fact is that this hat was born from folklore. There are stories about witches keeping organs inside of their hats and using for magical spells. Old Stories claim witches were only meant for evil and the hat was used to intensify their scary appearance. Good thing it's all fiction.

The Longchamp Travels

You know those lightweight bags with the leather handles that collapse into pocket sized mini amazingness? For those of you visual learners, I am referring to this beauty right here...

Long champ is French and pronounced Long-shamp. People go crazy over Longchamp bags and I would like to take a moment to tell you why they deserve the popularity. The history behind Longchamp is as fascinating as their bags.

The Fleur De Lis

You have seen the fleur-de-lis on handbags, jewelry, clothing, and various accessories. What is the history behind it? How did it become so popular? Why is the name so hard to pronounce? You know I have the answers to all of these questions!

The fleur-de-lis has French roots and means simply a stylized lily or iris. The amazing fact about this symbol is it represents many different meanings to various cultures. Such as religious, political, dynastic, artistic, and emblematic but all different interpretations and always viewed as one symbol, fleur-de-lis.

Cashmere is King

Imagine walking into a department store at the turn of the fall season. You catch the eye of the most comfortable, soft, amazing sweater. You've instantly fallen in love and then you glance at the price tag. Yikes! "Seriously", you think to yourself "$200 for a sweater?" You then frantically search for the manufacturers tag and read '100% cashmere'. Suddenly you see lights flashing and quickly realize that it's the light bulbs in your head. You slowly understand why it is so expensive, and maybe you cry a little. I have always wondered how cashmere was discovered. Why does it feel so amazing?

Harem, History?

In the fifth grade I wanted a pair of harem pants and imagined myself dancing like MC Hammer. Don't judge, I was only nine years old and real life seemed to be what was playing on MTV during that time. I talked my mom into making a pair of harem pants out of bright purple paisley fabric and accessorized them with a gold chain that hung at the waist. I chose the fabric and thought they were on par with Hammer. I was so proud of those harem pants and wanted nothing more than to have a unique pair that no one else wore. Looking back, it was a moment that I will cherish forever and chuckle to myself, "what was I thinking?" The irony is that I find myself telling that story a lot lately. You know why? Harem pants are back, that's right, they are back! The modern day versions are a little different but very stylish none the less.
